Learn How to Boost your Immunity from One of Our In-House Nutritionists, Brenda Ngina

We are living in uncertain times and one thing that we can all agree on is that we all want to make sure that we, and our loved ones, are keeping safe and healthy. Part of keeping safe and healthy is knowing that our immune systems are strong.

At Healthy U, we are here to help you select the right immunity boosters and educate you on your options.

So, what is “immunity”? Immunity simply put is your body’s ability to be able to fight off disease causing pathogens. In this blog, we want to get into the specifics of how you can boost your immunity.

How to boost your immunity through food
Food is an essential part of maintaining a healthy immune system. Paying attention to what is on your plate can indeed boost your immune system.

Eat More:
Make sure you eat plenty of fruits, especially citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. Also make sure you are getting plenty of vegetables, whole grains, and natural herbs such as garlic, ginger, turmeric. These contain natural compounds such as vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help elicit a good immune response.

Eat less:
Reducing your sugar, salt, alcohol and highly processed foods is important for a strong immune system. These substances through studies have shown to have a detrimental effect on the immune system. Studies by The American Journal of clinical nutrition showed that persons who were fed with as little as 100gms of sugar, experienced a slug in their white blood cells ability to fight off bacteria.

A tip when creating healthy and nutritional meals: the more colorful your plate is, the more of these compounds are getting into your system. Enjoy putting together colorful dishes of peppers, carrots, cantaloupes, spinach, and fresh turmeric and enjoy your journey to a better immunity for you and your family!

How to boost your immunity through hydration
Our immune system is dependent on the nutrients that we consume. When you are not properly hydrated the transportation of nutrients and their assimilation to your organs can decrease. Staying hydrated also helps with detoxification, which helps our bodies get rid of all waste from the system and function at an optimal level.

How to boost your immunity through rest
Consider your body as a machine that runs on batteries and rest is essential to recharge those batteries in order for your body to function at its best. When you are resting, your body releases protein compounds called cytokines which may have a protective effect to your immunity.

How to boost your immunity through supplements
Supplements have a positive impact on your immunity. They provide key essential nutrients that have been shown to help boost immunity.
Some key supplements we recommend include: Vitamin C, Zinc, Echinacea and Garlic supplements.
Vitamin C deficiency for example, can lead to increased susceptibility to infections. It plays an important role in the engulfing of pathogens from the system and barrier protection of cells from invasion by harmful organisms.

By putting these tips to practice, you will be creating a safe haven not just for yourself but also for your loved ones!

As always, stay safe.
